Apologies this is late getting out. First order of business…happy Father’s Day to all the dads of our NRXC athletes!
I. Week 2 Recap
We are starting to get into the swing of our summer schedule. Thank you for your patience as we get everything dialed in. I think our Tuesday/Thursday practices were much more efficient, and that comes down to re-working expectations, better planning, and improved execution (by both the coaches AND the athletes).

Going forward, I think you can generally plan for Monday practices to be over by 8:15 / 8:30 AM, Tuesday practices to be finished by 9:15 AM, Wednesday practices to be finished by 8:15 / 8:30 AM, Thursday practices to be done between 8:30 and 8:45 AM, and Friday practices to be done around 8:30 AM (unless we’re at a specialized location, in which case it could be a little later).
One of our big points of emphasis this year is trying to have the coaches step back occasionally and have our athletes take ownership of their own training. Practice this past Wednesday was led by our captains, and went very well. The Saturday long run was also captain led, and, though attendance was a little sparse, it was a good step forward. Ultimately, the upper limit of our program’s performance will depend on how invested our athletes are in their (and their teammates!) success and development. This will be a major point of emphasis, but I am happy with where we are starting!
II. News & Announcements
A. Monday’s Run
This is the MOST IMPORTANT announcement of the week. Although the location for Monday’s run says Mueller Park, we are going to do the run at Fernwood again. I apologize if this causes anyone an inconvenience. I just did not have the time this weekend to prepare for an early Monday at Mueller, much as I love the trail and would want to run there. So, we will meet at Fernwood at 7:00 AM as usual. Thank you!
B. Garmin Watches
I still have not received the watches. I am sorry for the inconvenience! I will follow up first thing Monday morning and update you all as soon as I know more.
C. Attendance and Mileage
Most of our athletes have been good about telling me when they are going to be out of town. We have been less good about reporting mileage. Please remind the athletes to send in their summer mileage. We had about 30% report their mileage in Week 1, which isn’t great, and percentages typically tail off from there. While we do our best to also talk with the athletes about their mileage, knowing what they are running each day is essential to providing them effective coaching. While this is their responsibility, and I will talk to them about it, I appreciate your cooperation in encouraging them to get their mileage in. Thanks!
D. Saturday Long Run
We have a long run on the schedule at Jeremy Ranch Road on Saturday morning. I want to invite ALL runners to attend this run. We will adjust mileage as necessary. The route is simply out-and-back, and so there is no danger of athletes getting lost. I would like as many of the team there as possible. We will have breakfast after the conclusion of the run. It takes about 50 minutes each way, and so we will need to coordinate carpools. I think we can do it without too much difficulty.
If you have an athlete driving themselves, or others, the roads are paved all the way to where we will start running (we will be running on a dirt road). I think there should be cell service all the way to the start, but there may be 1 or 2 miles without it. We will start running from the East Canyon side, and run toward Park City. If you have any concerns about transportation, please message me.

E. Fourth of July 5K
The 4th of July is coming up, and we want all our athletes to plan to run a 5K race on the 4th! For our athletes in town, it is easiest for them to sign up to run the Layton Liberty Days 5K. We always have a good showing every year, as does Layton High School. It’s fun for the kids to race each other. Of course, I love it when parents also sign up and run…the more the merrier! If you athlete is going to be out of town, I still expect them to run a race where they are going be. If you’re at a location where there is no race to run, or logistic otherwise will prevent them from racing, I expect each athlete to do a 5K time trial. This provides essential information about athletes’ fitness as we start to do workouts in preparation for the season.
As of this evening (Sunday, June 15, 2025), there are 115 spots left. The cost is $20, provided you register BEFORE June 22, 2025. After that, you have to do “day of” registration, which costs $40…so get your athlete registered ASAP! Here is the link to sign up: https://www.laytoncity.org/LC/Events/LibertyDays

IV. Other/Points of Emphasis
No video this week…I just ran out of time. I’ll do my best to get one up for next week, as there are many things I want to say to our athletes.
