Additional Information:
As we learned from Tuesday’s Pre-Region Meet, it will be hot, even early in the morning! Athletes need to bring their water bottles. They should also hydrate well the day before the race so that they do not risk starting in a somewhat dehydrated state. The morning of, they should eat a light breakfast so that they have appropriate energy.
The team will provide a water jug with ice water and some snacks, but athletes should not rely on those for their only source of fluids and fuel.
In my experience, athletes perform best if they focus on hydrating the day before the race and prior to arriving at the meet. While at the meet, athletes sometimes continue to drink in order to keep cool. There are other ways to cool down, which I will discuss with our runners. Please don’t misunderstand me — I want them appropriately hydrated, but that is mostly done in the days leading up to the race, and then on race day in smaller quantities. If they are over-drinking to cool off, it could affect their race performance.
TL;DR — Hydrate in the days before the race and the early morning of. Keep cool before you start.
